Imagine you work in the marketing department of a company that wants to get visibility to grow its brand. You would probably think of something other than printing your message on an approximately 3" tall, by a quarter of one inch wide piece of wood to accomplish “branding”. A piece of wood that may likely get broken into several pieces the first time it is used. Such is the case with putting a marketing message, or custom logo on golf tees. It may seem like a completely wasted effort for most, but considering there are billions of these mini billboards sold every year, it must be a good way to advertise, but why? First, anything with a logo on it can be, and is, sold through the promotional industry (an eighteen billion dollar per year industry). While logo tees would obviously not be the only thing a company would do to promote their brand, in some cases it may be the only item left to sponsor for corporate or charity tournaments. If you play golf, you know you need a tee, and there are now more choices than ever to fit your game, clubs, and/or preference. There are long tees for the 460cc drivers, medium tees for clubs similar to the early 90’s original metal woods, and short tees for par three holes when using an iron. There are brush tees that offer less friction at impact, environmentally friendly tees made from cornstarch and (believe it or not), grass seed/fertilizer to replace what you may remove. There are even glow-in-the-dark tees. Some tees are made of wood, plastic, metal (even gold plated), etc. Some come in clips, or you may have seen them in what look like a book of matches with logos on the cover, or just a plain old handful from the jar on the pro shop counter. For many, waiting to take their turn, it becomes a time when they look at what has been written on the tee they are about to push into the ground and potentially shatter. If you have to get your message across to a selected group (i.e., golfers), personalized tees are about as cheap as it gets. When you are sponsoring something for a tournament, the shirts, hats, ball markers, divot tools, balls, and accessories may already have another company’s logo. Do not be worried about settling for sponsoring golf tees; your message will be seen eventually. With the rules of golf changing every year, and technology marching forward, it may not be long before there is a ball that does not require a tee, so why not get your message on them while they’re still here.
