Custom Logo Golf Balls: What’s best for your tournament?

Golf tournament directors know that getting custom logo golf balls is a prerequisite.  If they know the handicaps of the players before the event and if they have an average of six or lower, then getting everyone a sleeve of Pro V1’s® is a good thing.  It will impress the golfers, and in some cases, they will expect nothing less.  Sometimes, however, less equals more!

From what I have seen, this caliber of golf ball can cost as much as $62 per dozen and then there are charges associated with getting the artwork set up & imprinting on them.  In this case, the expense is justified because most golfers in this flight will likely still have them after the event, and thereby will have something logo’ed to remember the event by.  They win and the sponsors win.

On the other hand, if your average golfer in the tournament is “average” then the expense of getting Pro V1’s® for 100 golfers may be in the range of $5 to $6 per ball, only to have most end up at the bottom of the nearest pond or out of bounds in some deep weeds.

I played in a tournament once where the gifts were very nice, from the shirts, hats, green repair tools, shoe bags, and even fine cigars being delivered to golfers, along with food and beverages by couriers in golf carts.  And yes, logo’ed golf balls were on our carts when we arrived to tee off.  We each received two sleeves of three balls each.

I was paired with a person in my cart who admitted to me after I arrived, that this was the first time he ever played golf.  I immediately shifted my focus from any delusions of placing to facing the fact that I was just going to try to enjoy the day in the sun.  On the FIRST tee, he went through both sleeves of his balls and three of my ball.  By the third hole, we had to go back to the clubhouse to buy more (no discounts there as you can imagine at Laguna Niguel, California), and by the turn, we had pretty much given up.  This person was actually using tees in the fairway (true story); until I asked him if he was goofing around, I had no idea he really thought that is how golf is played…He did not know you are not allowed to tee up a ball in the fairway.

My point here is that I would have rather had twelve dozen shag balls that day than the expensive logo ones.  Sometimes “A” ball is better than “The” ball in golf.

Knowing what to give is as important as knowing who you are giving to.  No one logo ball could have impressed me more that day, but many balls that day would have been nice.

If the way to impress people and keep them coming back is with giving them something to remember, then it stands to reason that the more your tournament can afford to give while staying within the guidelines of profitability for the charity, etc., the better off your event will be.

We happen to make a product that golfers can use during their round and for many rounds afterwards, which is also good because sponsors who pay big money to have their logos on everything they can, hope for memorable items that don’t end up in the water (Hello Golf-Balls!).

Practice, practice, practice…Enjoy Golf!
